As Revealed In His Name

ו  VAV
And those who know Your name will put their trust in You,
For You, O Yahweh, have not forsaken those who seek You.

Psalm 9:10 LSB

All that the name of Jesus means to us, “Yahweh” meant to ancient Israel. It meant to them everything in the way of salvation and blessing.  Elohim is God as Creator of all things, but Yahweh is the same God in covenant relations with those whom He has created. Yahweh means the eternal, the immutable One, He, Who was, and is, and is to come. He is the God of Israel and the God of those who are redeemed, and thus now “in Christ” we can say, “Yahweh is our God.”

– Emery H. Bancroft

“In the Old Testament, God revealed his covenant name as Yahweh, (the LORD). Holiness was the emphasis. The ‘fear of the LORD’ was our proper response. In the New Testament, God is still holy, but a new relationship has been emphasized. ‘Father’ has become his covenant name and the name by which his people call him.”

– J. I. Packer

The I AM

“And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Exodus 3:14 LSB

“I AM THAT I AM” is the thought behind the name Yahweh.  Three things are involved; the self-sufficiency of God, His absolute sovereignty and His unchangeableness.

– Emery H. Bancroft

Yahweh-Jireh (The LORD will provide)

Then Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, there was a ram after it had been caught in the thicket by its horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up for a burnt offering in the place of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Yahweh Will Provide, as it is said this day, “In the mount of Yahweh it will be provided.”

Genesis 22:13-14 LSB

The faithfulness of the Lord is so great that no mind can comprehend it, no hand can fold it, no mouth can describe it and no experience can compete with it. All that our hearts will need, His hands will provide!

Rather I indeed come now as commander of the host of Yahweh.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and bowed down and said to him, “What has my lord to say to his slave?”

Joshua 5:13-14 LSB

Some boast in chariots and some in horses,

But we will boast in the name of Yahweh, our God.

Yahweh-Rapha (The LORD that heals)

And He said, “If you will earnestly listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, Yahweh, am your healer.”

– Exodus 15:26

And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
Bless Yahweh, O my soul,

Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
Who satisfies your years with good things,

So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.
