How To Memorize Scripture for Life

A Review of Andrew M. Davis’ book

Years ago, when I was in high school, I was fortunate enough to have been exposed to the ministry of Dawson Trotman and The Navigators. Through his “Topical Memory System” I memorized hundreds of Bible verses that have encouraged and blessed me throughout my Christian walk.

This experience greatly enriched my spiritual journey and instilled in me a deep appreciation for the power and wisdom found within the Scriptures. The Topical Memory System, with its structured approach to memorization, not only strengthened my faith but also provided a firm foundation for navigating life’s challenges.

Dr. Andrew Davis, a pastor in North Carolina with this Ph.D from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has taken memory texts to a new level in such a way that it can be applied to entire books of the Bible (something I have been extremely interested in for sometime now).  The system is easy to use, and not overtaxing, and comes from Pastor Davis’ life-long experience in memorizing Scripture.

In his brief book, How to Memorize Scripture for Life: From One Verse to Entire Books, the author provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the importance of memorizing Scripture, offering insights into the Biblical rationale behind this practice. Moreover, the book delves into practical strategies for overcoming common excuses that may hinder one from committing verses to memory, while also presenting a detailed daily procedure designed to facilitate effective Scripture memorization. Additionally, the author addresses potential challenges that individuals may encounter on their journey to memorizing Scripture, providing valuable guidance on how to navigate and overcome these obstacles.

Now that I am in my late 60’s, I find it even more crucial to systematically memorize texts. And learning entire books of the Bible is a refreshing, beneficial (both spiritually and mentally), and rewarding endeavor. Although the book uses the ESV and starts with Ephesians, you can apply this to your favorite translation and any book of the Bible.

In the case of memorizing entire books of the Bible, the undertaking can be particularly transformative. The immersive nature of this endeavor provides a comprehensive understanding of the historical context, recurring themes, and overarching narrative of the chosen book. Moreover, it opens avenues for profound reflection, enabling individuals to draw parallels between the ancient wisdom offered in the scriptures and their contemporary lives.

In essence, the disciplined practice of memorizing texts, especially those imbued with spiritual significance, not only fosters cognitive fortitude and mental agility but also nourishes the soul. It is a timeless endeavor that continues to enrich and reward individuals, regardless of age or stage in life.

Learning how to memorize Scripture is an essential and enriching practice that should be an integral part of every Christian’s daily life. Throughout most of the history of the Church, access to the written word was limited, and Christians relied on memorization to internalize and uphold God’s word. In his endorsement of How To Memorize Scripture for Life, Dr. D. A. Carson aptly expressed the significance of this practice, stating, “This may prove to be the most important book you read this year.” This endorsement underscores the profound impact that the art of memorizing Scripture can have on one’s spiritual journey. Embracing this timeless tradition fosters a deeper connection with the teachings and wisdom encapsulated in the Scriptures, nurturing a profound understanding of faith and strengthening the spiritual foundation of believers. Therefore, committing to the discipline of memorizing Scripture stands as a testament to the dedication and reverence for the Word of God, enriching one’s spiritual life in a profound and lasting manner.
