The importance of a name in Scripture

In Scripture, names are important and often reveal something about the individual. For example, Moses means drawn out of, and Moses was drawn out of the Nile River.  Likewise, what we perceive as simply a title are, in Scripture, also names. Lord is not only a title, but is also a name. We see this in the Trinity:

There are several title names given to the Holy Spirit (which itself is a title name) which likewise tell us something about the nature of the Person of the Spirit. 

Many names are given to the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures, which reveal to us various aspects of His Person and work. The numerousness of these titles seems to warrant a special study of them.

1. The Comforter, Advocate, Helper

2. The Eternal Spirit

3. The Spirit of God

4. The Spirit of Yahweh

5. The Spirit of the Living God

Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.	And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.	Being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, ministered to by us, having been written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of hearts of flesh.

6. The Spirit of Jesus Christ

7. The Spirit of Burning

8. The Spirit if Truth

9. The Spirit of Grace

Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?	How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?	How much worse punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as defiled the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

10. The Spirit of Glory

But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.	But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.
