Tim Wildsmith’s book on finding the right Bible for you.

What a fun read!

Tim Wildsmith’s Bible Translations for Everyone, from Zondervan, is an outstanding guide for anyone seeking clarity in the world of Bible translations. Wildsmith, a pastor and popular YouTuber, brings his passion for Scripture and years of experience helping others find their perfect Bible into this well-crafted resource. His YouTube channel, which I personally subscribe to and enjoy, has become a go-to destination for Bible reviews and practical advice on selecting the right translation. This book feels like an extension of his engaging video content, providing readers with a comprehensive and approachable exploration of the many Bible translations available today.

Wildsmith, it seems to me, personifies each translation, bringing them to life as vibrant and distinct characters. For example, the NASB shines as the meticulous scholar, celebrated for its precise word-for-word handling of the original languages, while the NLT comes forth as the warm-hearted storyteller, eager to convey the essence of the message. The King James Version is lovingly portrayed as the wise elder, steeped in rich tradition and beautiful English, and the CSB is seen as the harmonious mediator, offering a delightful blend of readability and accuracy. His approach makes the book not only enlightening but also incredibly engaging for readers.

There are 15 short chapters covering the basics of Bible translations, early English translations, as well as chapters for the KJV, RV/ASV, RSV, NASB, NIV, NKJV, NRSV, NLT, ESV, and CSB. He also includes a chapter on other translations currently available (such as the LSB, the NET, and the Message). He has a chapter on Catholic Bible translations and, finally, in keeping with his calling, a chapter entitled “Finding a Bible That’s Right for You.” The book is filled with photos, quotes from various translations, as well as their history and translational philosophy. Tim presents these topics in a fun way that, in my opinion, achieves its main goal . . . encouraging everyone to find the right Bible for them.

In addition to profiling the translations, Wildsmith provides practical advice on choosing the right Bible for different contexts, whether for study, devotion, or public reading. He addresses common questions like how to balance accuracy with readability and whether to prioritize word-for-word or thought-for-thought translations. Wildsmith’s impartial tone ensures that readers feel empowered to make decisions that suit their personal spiritual journeys.

Bible Translations for Everyone is an invaluable resource for Bible readers of all levels. Tim Wildsmith’s dual role as a pastor and a YouTube personality adds a unique depth to this book, combining pastoral care with practical, real-world advice. His ability to make a potentially overwhelming topic approachable and enjoyable is a testament to his expertise and passion. For anyone looking to deepen their understanding of the Bible and find a translation that speaks to their heart, this book—and his YouTube channel—are must-haves.
