Why Is There Something Instead of Nothing?

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1

Have you ever stopped to think about something big?

Like the sky.
Or the stars.
Or the whole universe.

Sometimes Bible Explorers stop and ask an amazing question.

Why is there anything at all?

Why is there a world?
Why is there space?
Why is there something instead of nothing?

That question matters more than we might think.

Because nothing cannot make something.

If you leave an empty box alone forever, nothing will appear inside it.

Nothing has no power.
Nothing has no energy.
Nothing cannot create.

But the universe exists.

Everything we see had a beginning.

Trees grow from seeds.
Buildings are made by builders.
Paintings come from painters.

Things do not just appear.

The universe is no different.

Scientists have discovered that the universe had a beginning.

It has not existed forever.

Time, space, and matter all began together.

That means the universe could not create itself.

Something cannot create itself because it would need to exist before it existed.

That does not make sense.

So if the universe began, something outside the universe must have caused it.

That cause must be very powerful.

It must be outside time, because time began with the universe.

It must be outside space, because space began with the universe.

And it must be able to choose to create.

This cause sounds a lot like God.

The Bible tells us that God is eternal.

That means He did not have a beginning.

He did not need to be created.

God exists outside the universe and gives everything else its existence.

The universe is not an accident.

It is not a lucky explosion.

It is the result of a powerful Creator.

When we look at the world, we are not just seeing matter.

We are seeing evidence.

The universe points beyond itself.

Just like a painting points to an artist, creation points to a Creator.

This does not prove everything about God yet.

But it tells us something very important.

God did not come from the universe.

The universe came from God.

That is why believing in God makes sense.

Not because we wish He were real.

But because the world we live in needs an explanation.

And God is the best explanation.

Think About It

• Why can’t nothing create something?

• What things around you had to be made by someone?

• Why do you think the universe having a beginning matters?

• What does it tell you about God that He does not need to be created?

• How does knowing God made the universe make you feel?
