As Revealed in Scripture
Before the mountains were born
– Psalm 90:2 LSB
Or You brought forth the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, both His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
– Romans 1:20 LSB
God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.
– Augustine
Consider what you owe to His immutability. Though you have changed a thousand times, He has not changed once.
– Charles Spurgeon
1. God is Spirit
God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
– John 4:24 LSB

– 1 Timothy 1:17 LSB
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
– Colossians 1:15 LSB
All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together.
We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter.
― Max Planck
From the teaching of the Old Testament, it is made clear that God in His essential being is spirit, and as spirit is immaterial and hence cannot be seen by the material eye nor represented by material things.
– Emery H. Bancroft
2. God is Creator
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
– Genesis 1:1 LSB
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
– John 1:1-3 LSB
Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”
– Revelation 4:11 LSB
The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator. Science brings men nearer to God.
– Louis Pasteur
God is the Creator God, he doesn’t want to say, “Okay, creation was very good, but I’m scrapping it.” He wants to say, “Creation is so good that I’m going to rescue it.”
– N. T. Wright
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.– Apostles Creed
3. God is Holy
And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within, and day and night they do not cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.” And when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, to Him who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders will fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and will worship Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”
– Revelation 4:8-11 LSB
Because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
– 1 Peter 1:16 LSB
And one called out to another and said,
– Isaiah 6:3 LSB
“Holy, Holy, Holy, is Yahweh of hosts;
The whole earth is full of His glory.”
Yahweh reigns, let the peoples tremble;
– Psalm 99:1-3 LSB
He sits enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth quake!
Yahweh is great in Zion,
And He is exalted above all the peoples.
Let them praise Your great and awesome name;
Holy is He.
Only when we understand the holiness of God will we understand the depth of our sin.
– Billy Graham
How marvelous is God’s love! It would be no wonder if an unholy God could love unholy men; but that the God whose name is holy, the Infinitely Holy God, could love brings so utterly sinful as we are, that is the wonder of the Eternities. There are many deep mysteries in the Bible, but no other so profound as this.
– R. A. Torrey
Power is God’s hand or arm, omniscience is God’s eye, mercy is God’s delight, eternity is God’s duration, but holiness is God’s beauty!
– Stephen Charnock
4. God is Just and Righteous
Yahweh is righteous in her midst;
– Zephaniah 3:5 LSB
He will do no injustice.
Every morning He brings His justice to light;
He does not fail.
But the unjust knows no shame.
Yahweh is in His holy temple; Yahweh’s throne is in heaven;
– Psalm 11:4-7 LSB
His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.
Yahweh tests the righteous,
But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.
May He rain snares upon the wicked;
Fire and brimstone and burning wind will be the portion of their cup.
For Yahweh is righteous, He loves righteousness;
The upright will behold His face.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
– 1 John 1:9 LSB
5. God is Love
And we have come to know and have believed the love which God has in us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this, love has been perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
– 1 John 4:16-18 LSB
In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
– 1 John 4:10 LSB
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
– John 3:16 LSB
Love is patient, love is kind, is not jealous, does not brag, is not puffed up; it does not act unbecomingly, does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered; it does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; it bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
– 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 LSB
Your lovingkindness, O Yahweh, is in the heavens,
– Psalm 36:5-7 LSB
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
Your judgments are like a great deep.
O Yahweh, You save man and beast.
How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
And the sons of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us; just as the roof of a sunhouse does not attract the sun because it is bright, but becomes bright because the son shines on it.
– C.S. Lewis
6. God is Good
Oh give thanks to Yahweh, for He is good,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
– 1 Psalm 107:1 LSB
Then Yahweh passed by in front of him and called out, “Yahweh, Yahweh God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;
– Exodus 34:6 LSB
And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.
– Mark 10:18 LSB
(M)oral values are not independent of God because God’s own character defines what is good. God is essentially compassionate, fair, kind, impartial, and so on. His nature is the moral standard determining good and bad. His commands necessarily reflect in turn his moral nature. Therefore, they are not arbitrary. The morally good/bad is determined by God’s nature, and the morally right/wrong is determined by his will. God wills something because he is good, and something is right because God wills it.
– William Lane Craig
7. God is Mercy
Yahweh is compassionate and gracious,
– Psalm 103:8 LSB
Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.
– Isaiah 55:7 LSB
Let the wicked forsake his way
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
And let him return to Yahweh,
And He will have compassion on him,
And to our God,
For He will abundantly pardon.
ח HETH
– Lamentations 3:22-23 LSB
The lovingkindnesses of Yahweh indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
He saved us, not by works which we did in righteousness, but according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit
– Titus 3:5 LSB
Mercy is the act of withholding deserved punishment, while grace is the act of endowing unmerited favor. In His mercy, God does not give us punishment we deserve, namely hell; while in His grace, God gives us the gift we do not deserve, namely heaven.
– Philip Wijaya
8. God is Grace
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not of works, so that no one may boast.
– Ephesians 2:8-9 LSB
But if it is by grace, it is no longer of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.
– Romans 11:6 LSB
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us that, denying ungodliness and worldly desires, we should live sensibly, righteously, and godly in the present age
– Titus 2:11-12 LSB
Grace is God’s best idea. His decision to ravage a people by love, to rescue passionately, and to restore justly – what rivals it? Of all his wonderous words, grace, in my estimation, is the magnum opus – Max Lucado
Now, when it was in his power to say, and rightly to say:
But the wages of righteousness is eternal life,he yet preferred to say:The grace of God is eternal life;in order that we may hence understand that God does not, for any merits of our own, but from His own divine compassion, prolong our existence to everlasting life.– Augustine of Hippo
9. God is Self-Existent
For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself
– John 5:26 LSB
And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
– Exodus 3:14 LSB
(W)hich He will bring about at the proper time—He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal might! Amen.
– 1 Timothy 6:15-16 LSB
10. God is Eternal
So they cut a covenant at Beersheba; and Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, arose and returned to the land of the Philistines. And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of Yahweh, the Everlasting God. And Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines for many days.
– Genesis 21:32-34 LSB
And like a mantle You will roll them up;
– Hebrews 1:12 LSB
Like a garment they will also be changed.
But You are the same,
And Your years will not come to an end.
– Psalm 93:2 LSB
Your throne is established from of old;
You are from everlasting.
11. God is Immutable
For I, Yahweh, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.
– Malachi 3:6 LSB
Also the Eternal One of Israel will not lie or have regret; for He is not a man that He should have regret.

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
– James 1:17 LSB
12. God is All-Knowing
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!
– Romans 11:33 LSB
Can you find the depths of God?
– Job 11:7-8 LSB
Can you find the limits of the Almighty?
They are high as the heavens, what can you do?
Deeper than Sheol, what can you know?
Do you not know? Have you not heard?
– Isaiah 40:28 LSB
The Everlasting God, Yahweh, the Creator of the ends of the earth,
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is unsearchable.
Power is God’s hand or arm, omniscience is God’s eye, mercy is God’s delight, eternity is God’s duration, but holiness is God’s beauty!
– Stephen Charnock
God will not hold us responsible to understand the mysteries of election, predestination, and the divine sovereignty. The best and safest way to deal with these truths is to raise our eyes to God and in deepest reverence say, “0 Lord, Thou knowest.” Those things belong to the deep and mysterious Profound of God’s omniscience. Prying into them may make theologians, but it will never make saints.
– A. W. Tozer
13. God is Everywhere
Where can I go from Your Spirit?
– Psalm 139:7-10 LSB
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
If I lift up the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
Even there Your hand will lead me,
And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.
– Matthew 18:20 LSB
What a comfort to be told that, with all our seeming separation, we are still inmates of the same house – the house of God. That is just what the Psalmist says. He says that absolute separation between two souls is an impossibility, that the wings of the morning can never lift us outside the gates of God.
– George Matheson
One of the first things we learn about God is that He is present everywhere.
It’s one of those things that are basic to what it means to be God. Just like the fact that He is all-powerful. In fact, the two seem to come hand in hand: the God who is omnipotent must also be omnipresent. The God who can spin a far-away galaxy while He counts the hairs on our head must be everywhere at once.
– Stephen Beale
14. God is All-Powerful
And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
– Matthew 19:26 LSB
The rivers have lifted up, O Yahweh,
– Psalm 93:3-4 LSB
The rivers have lifted up their voice,
The rivers lift up their pounding waves.
More than the voices of many waters,
Than the mighty breakers of the sea,
Yahweh on high is mighty.
‘Ah Lord Yahweh! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You
– Jeremiah 32:17 LSB
15. God is Triune
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to keep all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
– Matthew 28:19-20 LSB
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
– 2 Corinthians 13:14 LSB
And after being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him, and behold, there was a voice out of the heavens saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
– Matthew 3:16-17 LSB
The Father is all the fullness of the Godhead invisible, the Son, of the Godhead manifested, and the Spirit, of the Godhead acting immediately upon the creature.
– George Boardman
We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible;
And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten from the Father before all ages, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one substance with the Father, through Whom all things came into existence, Who because of us men and because of our salvation came down from the heavens, and was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man, and was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried, and rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures and ascended to heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father, and will come again with glory to judge living and dead, of Whose kingdom there will be no end;
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and life-giver, Who proceeds from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son is together worshipped and together glorified, Who spoke through the prophets; in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We confess one baptism to the remission of sins; we look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen
– Nicene Creed
