The ESV Study Bible Large Print Edition is one of the most comprehensive and thoughtfully constructed study Bibles available today. It brings together scholarly depth and everyday usability in a way that serves both serious students of Scripture and those simply seeking to grow in their daily reading.

One of the most immediate strengths of this edition is its large print format. This is not simply a scaled up Bible. It is intentionally designed for extended reading and study. The text is set in a clear 10.75 point font, making it noticeably easier on the eyes while still maintaining a clean, well-balanced page. The double column layout is familiar and intuitive, allowing readers to move naturally between the biblical text and the study notes without distraction.

Usability is another area where the ESV Study Bible excels. The layout is clean, the notes are well organized, and the cross references are easy to follow. My wife noted that she “loves all the references and ease in using it.” That balance of accessibility and depth is one of the defining strengths of this edition.

What truly sets this apart is the sheer scope of its content. With over 20,000 study notes, 80,000 cross references, and more than two million words of resources, this is not simply a Bible with notes. It is a complete study system bound into a single volume. The work itself represents the collaboration of 95 leading Bible scholars and teachers from multiple countries, denominations, and academic institutions, giving it both breadth and credibility.

This edition includes extensive theological articles on topics such as salvation, ethics, biblical interpretation, and the canon of Scripture. It also provides rich historical context, covering subjects like the ancient Near East, Second Temple Judaism, and the spread of Christianity. The illustration and diagram sections are especially valuable, featuring detailed renderings of the tabernacle, Solomon’s Temple, and Herod’s Temple complex, along with 240 plus maps and illustrations, over 200 charts and timelines, and more than 50 theological articles. These are not decorative additions. They are educational tools that help the reader visualize and understand the biblical world.

There are also character profiles, reading plans, concordance tools, and topical guides that support both structured study and personal devotion. Taken together, these features make this Bible not just informative, but deeply instructive.

The editorial credibility behind this work further strengthens its value. With J. I. Packer (one of my spiritual mentors) serving as general editor, the ESV Study Bible reflects a deep commitment to theological clarity and faithfulness to Scripture. I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Packer for a documentary on Christian worship shortly after the original Study Bible was released, and his passion for helping believers understand God’s Word is evident throughout this work.

The physical construction of this edition also deserves mention. Bound in genuine leather with smyth sewn construction, it is designed for long term durability. The Bible measures approximately 6.5 inches by 9.25 inches by 2.75 inches, contains 3,008 pages, and weighs just under five pounds. It has a substantial feel in hand, making it ideal for desk study, teaching, and home use rather than portability.

The ESV Study Bible has now sold over 2.5 million copies and was recognized as the ECPA Book of the Year, which speaks to both its quality and its impact.

It is also worth noting the remarkable consistency of praise this Bible has received. Dr. John Piper described the scope and theological faithfulness of its notes as “breathtaking.” Joni Eareckson Tada highlighted the clarity and reliability of the text as an outstanding resource for understanding God’s Word. Albert Mohler called it a treasure useful for both seasoned pastors and new believers alike. And, Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth emphasized its ability to connect the grand redemptive story across Scripture. These are not casual endorsements. They reflect a broad recognition of the Bible’s depth, clarity, and usefulness.

For readers looking for a study Bible that offers clarity, depth, and readability without becoming overwhelming, the ESV Study Bible Large Print Edition is an excellent choice. It does not simply provide information. It equips the reader to understand Scripture more fully and engage it more deeply. Over time, this becomes more than a Bible you read. It becomes a Bible you return to again and again as a trusted guide in studying God’s Word.
